Atlanta Braves 5, Philadelphia Phillies 3

Mike Hampton (11-9) pitched a fine ballgame, throwing 8 innings of 2 hit ball. He allowed one earned run on a solo home run by Mike Lieberthal, walked one, but only struck out one. I suppose that when you only allow 2 hits though, you can get away with that.

The game was 1-1 into the 6th inning, when Andruw Jones hit what appeared to be a routine flyball that ended up being a 2 run homer (his 22nd). Citizens Bank Park's short dimensions and the wind likely played a part in that. The Braves added a couple of more runs and hung on when John Smoltz made a 4 run lead interesing in the 9th inning. But the Braves hung on to a 5-3 win.

Hitting stars: Andruw Jones had just one hit, but that homer was the difference in the game. Eli Marrero was 3 for 4 and Julio Franco was 2 for 5.

Game Notes: Roman Colon was optioned to Greenville and DeWayne Wise was recalled from Richmond. This was because of the deadline to set the rosters before September, and the Braves now have 14 position players and 11 pitchers.

Jaret Wright will oppose Vicente Padilla in what would appear to be a pitcher's duel, but in Citizens Bank Park who knows. Padilla always pitches well against the Braves though.
