New York Mets 9, Atlanta Braves 7

The Braves lost game 1 of the doubleheader after leading 4-1 in the 6th inning. Jaret Wright (14-7) fatigued, and Bobby Cox was reluctant to go to the bullpen after their struggles lately and it cost the Braves. Wright gave up 5 runs in the 6th, and even though the Braves offense rallied, Travis Smith gave up a 3 run homer to put the game out of reach.

Wright ended up going 5 and two thirds innings allowing 6 runs on 7 hits, 2 walks, and 6 strikeouts. Kevin Gryboski and Tim Drew had scoreless appearances, but Smith gave up the homer to put the game out of reach.

Hitting Stars: Andruw Jones had just one hit, but it was a 2 run homer in the 4 run 4th (his 28th homer). Marcus Giles was 3 for 5. JD Drew and Adam LaRoche each had 2 hits.
